1993 to present Founding Director of own practice now Place 54 Architects Ltd, previously from 1980 Former partner of Farrells, Gary Young has over 40 years experience winning awards and delivering placemaking and masterplans in detail for mixed use regeneration projects with private developers & local authorities.
Formerly As design partner with Sir Terry Farrell from 1980 to 1993 and consultatbt until 2016 he gained wide experience of delivery of projects for mixed uses in city centres, garden towns and villages.
City Centre regeneration projects designed with Farrells include: Comyn Ching Triangle mixed use regeneration, Covent Garden, 1984 to 1996, listed grade 2 in 2016; Edinburgh Conference Centre & Business District, Edinburgh 1989 to 1992; Brindley Place Birmingham mixed use masterplan1990 to 1995; Newcastle Quayside mixed use regeneration and Centre for Life education district from1995 to 2000.
Garden towns completed with Farrells include the 4000 home Cambourne new settlement near Cambridge from1995 to 2005 which has won landscape awards and the NW Bicester Eco town masterplan in Oxfordshire 2010-2015.
Founding his own practice in 1998 now as Place 54 Architects, Gary led the mixed use regeneration of Norwich riverside from 1998 to 2005 for retail, leisure and housing on 30 hectares with transport improvements and integration with Norwich railway station and new bridges across the River Wensum.
Gary led the masterplan design for NW Bicester Eco town exemplar phase of 393 homes and village centre which won the prestigious Bioregional One Planet Living award in 2015 and is currently designing a further phase of NW Bicester mixed use masterplan for 1000 homes and a village centre for A2 Dominion and Thames Valley Police Authority. He led the team with Arcadis which gained outline planning permission in 2023 for the 10,000 home Otterpool Park Garden Town, near Folkestone in Kent.
Relevant business and logistics masterplan projects Gary has designed include: the masterplan for a logistics hub at Dubai South airport for EZ Dubai in 2019; large scale logistic parks for GPL at Kassel and Berlin in Germany 2000 to 2010, Business and logistic parks in UK at Hemel Hempstead, Crayford and Enfield from 1999 to 2005; large scale bakeries for Warburton’s in Bolton, Wakefield, Bristol and Enfield from 2000 to 2015.
With the LDN Collective Gary has led masterplan designs including: the Harrington garden town masterplan in Oxfordshire for 5000 homes for Summix 2020 to 2023; Garden Village for 1500 homes near Solihull for Summix 2021 to present; Sibson Garden town for 4000 homes near Peterborough for Larkfleet 2021 to 2023.
